The Eleventh. Expunged.

Description

"He was unusal even among his brothers. Too silent and secluded, but charismatic anyway. He wasn't close enough to any of his brothers-primarchs... It seemed, for some time, that Magnus the Red found an approach to him; but these were the discussions of two researchers of the warp and old archives, which were stopped by the Emperor, dissatisfied with too active and daring experiments of His sons.
But there were one more factor, which made both of the a bit close to each other - their Legions. Something more, than brotherhood - a family. He spend most of time with his spacemarines, sharing the drilling, meals and leisure time. He loved his Eleventh Legion and cared for it, as mother cares for her child. And, it seems, that the Legion was the most important thing for him. Legion, but not the Imperium or Emperor.
He knew every spacemarine by name, but remained their commander - the one, they loved and and standed in awe of...
And that has become a problem, when his spacemarines began to die. It appeared, that he wasn't ready for losses and that became a disaster. He was broken and started to seek the ways to save his Legion even there, where the sane ones didnt' dare to seek... He just... didn't want to loose his men anymore.
The consequences were... terrible, despite the interference of the Emperor. The imperium was saved and lived along in ignorance, but the Eleventh Legion and its primarch were purged from the annals of the Imperium and gone in the darkness of ages. Only the empty pedestal among the sculptures of other primarchs in the Emperor's Palace reminded about the tragedy." author's fantasy.

I'm fascinated by the Rainbow Serpents because they have an Aztec theme that could make them a very interesting, Codex-noncompliant Chapter with neat models and rules. Aaaand... before the Missing Legions negated the lore in Second Edition, they were a First Founding Legion!

(I once thought they might be the XI, but the redaction bar over the II Legion's name in a noteworthy book is ideally suited to contain the words "Rainbow Serpents".)

The Rainbow Serpents of current lore are possibly still the II Legion, 'laundered' by the Second Founding after almost all baseline humans who would remember them would be dead of age. The Rainbow Serpents are now listed as descendants of the Ultramarines... whose numbers and materiel mysteriously skyrocketed at about the time the Lost Legions were expunged from record.
